Medium description: | Cromwell's retribution for the Catholic rebellion of 1641, among its many results was the replacement of large parts of the Irish landowning class with, among others, 35,000 English soldiers. Cromwell left Ireland in the spring of 1650 but the campaign continued till May 1652 with the fall of Galway. Cromwell's son-in-law, Henry Ireton took control on Cromwell's departure and he was followed by Edmund Ludlow and Charles Fleetwood. | ||
