Short description: | Gouin's 'The Art of Teaching and Studying Languages' published
Medium description: | Publication in Paris of Francois Gouin's 'Art d'enseigner et d'étudier les langues' ('The Art of Teaching and Studying Languages'). Gouin had written the book earlier and had had it printed privately in Geneva. In the book he outlines his 'series' technique, describes its benefits. Also includes an attack on other methods and the 'discovery' of the 'series' in the form of the story of Gouin's own attempt to learn German. The 'series' method consisted of descriptions of processes and events, with each sentence repeating some of the parts of the previous sentence. A modern example might be 'The student switches on the computer. The student runs a program. The program opens in a new window. The program displays some data in the new window, etc'
