Medium description: | Sweet presents his paper 'On the Practical Study of Language' to the Philological Society. The thrust of the paper was a call for a reform of language teaching based on the latest "modern scientific linguistics" (Howatt, 1984) and included suggestions that: - the spoken language should be taken as the foundation of the language taught - texts should be chosen that allow grammar analysis to follow an appreciation of the content and not vice versa Howatt (1984) claims it should be considered "the founding document of an applied linguistic approach to language teaching". "[D]elivered on the occassion of the address in honour of James Murray, the then President" (Howatt,1985, p.332). Delayed its publication until after the publication of his textbook, "Das Elementarbuch des gesprochenen Englisch". Howatt (1982) suggests that the paper was reworked or "developed" prior to publishing. [Howatt (1982) refers to it simply as 'The Practical Study of Language'] | |
