Short description: | Cocker's "English Dictionary"
Medium description: | Edward Cocker's "English Dictionary" published. Containing 22000 words. The title page states that it was "By Edward Cocker ... Perused and published from the authors correct copy, by John Hawkins". However, authorship is disputed and is thought likely to be a work merely playing on the reputation of both Cocker and Hawkins by the book publishers J. Back and A. Back. Composed of 4 sections: hard words, "historico-political", military and commercial. The latter two not occuring in a general purpose dictionary prior to this time (Starnes & Noyes, 1991).
