Medium description: | Thomas Wright Hill father of Rowland Hill, opens his 1st school at Hazelwood, Birmingham. According to Barnard (1961) incorporated some of "the most modern and 'progressive' educational principles" (p. 21) that not only supplemented a curriculum of the usual Classics with French, English and mathematics but also added drawing, painting, music and other arts. Also included a system of discipline in which the school rules were set and administered by the students themselves. | |
