Short description: | Birkbeck starts lectures at Glasgow
Medium description: | George Birkbeck starts lectures at Glasgow as chair of natural philosophy set up by an endowment in the will of Anderson. According to Barnard (1961), upon starting his lectures, Birkbeck realised he required a number of instruments to be built and whilst overseeing the making of the instruments he decided to start a series of lectures in mechanics for those who may have had no formal scientific education. Barnard doesn't state when these lectures started though. Lee (2004) states that Birkbeck received the support of Dugald Stewart for his appointment. Lee (2004) also states that Birkbeck was appointed to the position in December but doesn't give a date for the commencement of his teaching. Lee (2004) identifies Anderson's Institution as the location of the lectures whilst Barnard (1961) is unclear on the location but implies it was somehow attached to Glasgow University and Nature (1941) place them at the Anderson College of Glasgow.
