Medium description: | Governesses' Benevolent Institution founded to give financial support to governesses. British governesses did not have the formal training and certification that their Swiss and German competitors had, so it was planned that the Institution would offer examination in such certification. However, the academic level of the entrants was found to be so low that it was felt that there was a need for teacher training to be provided. Barnard (1961) states that F D Maurice became interested in the Institution as one of his sisters was a governess. Barnard states that Maurice "enlisted the help of his brother professors at Kings College, London" (p.157). | |
