Short description: | First British parliamentary grant for education
Medium description: | Government grant for the building of schools for the 'Poorer Classes of Great Britain' of £20,000 to be distributed by the National Society and the British and Foreign School Society. It was a fund to support the building of school buildings by non-governmental projects capable of raising the same amount as the grant awarded. 'The National Society' and the 'British and Foreign School Society' were the main beneficiaries. Barnard (1961) states that the grant became an annual one and that the amount increased yearly.
