Short description: | Education Act passed
Medium description: | Elementary Education Act passed. Act divided the country up into a number of school districts and gave the Education Department the right to assess the levels of provision in each district. If the provision of education was found to be inadequate, local religious voluntary bodies had a period of time to rectify the situation, for which they could apply for a government garnt. However, if they were unable to then newly created local scholl board would be created and they would have responsibility for the creation of suitable schools to provide the educational services. The act also: - allowed school boards to appoint a school attendance officer to enforce school attendance - stated that education was still not to be paid for by the state but by parents [month and day from Bernard (1961)]
