Medium description: | Edward Phillips publishes "The New World of English Words". Contains a history of the English language in the preface; Phillips claimed to have used the services of a team of subject specialists in the compilation but the text shows little evidence of this (Starnes & Noyes, 1991). In the "Advertisement to the Reader" he belittles the efforts made by Blount. However, he borrows more from Blount's "Glossographia" than any other source. Crystal states 20000 words whilst Starnes & Noyes (1991) state around 11000. | ||
