Medium description: | Jonathon Swift's letter to the Lord Treasurer of England, the Earl of Oxford, was later published as 'Proposal for Correcting, Improving and Ascertaining the English Tongue'. In it he outlines ideas on the fixing of the English language. Included were a call for an academy, on the French lines, and was probably the closest England came to setting up one. The 'Proposal' was attacked by Oldmixon. | ||
