Medium description: | Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) first set. Consisted of 7 parts: - translation from English (into French or German) - translation into English (from French or German) - essay (on 1 of 6 topics) - English Literature (this was taken from the English Language and Literature paper in the Higher Local Examination) - phonetics - dictation - reading aloud & conversation Originally designed as a test of English proficiency for prospective teachers of English (Roach, 1945 cited in Spolsky, 1995). The first test was sat by just 3 students, all taking the exam in one centre in London (Weir, 2013). Test was taken by 12 students in its first year (O'Sullivan, 2012). O'Sullivan (2012) claims test was based on Henry Sweet's 'coherent philospophy' of language learning while Weir (2003, p.2) claims "[t]he exam closely matched the contents of Sweet's (1899) 'The Practical Study of Languages'". | |||
