Medium description: | "National Society for Promoting the Education of the Poor in the Principles of the Established Church" formed to promote the claim of the Church of England to control education (Knowles). It took over the charity schools that had up to that point been sponsored by the SPCK. Received donations from both Oxford and Cambridge Universities (Barnard, 1961). Schools needed to follow monitorial system of Bell to receive aid from the society. They also needed to teach the Liturgy and the Catechism of the Church of England and to take the pupils to church on Sundays. | ||
