| Medium description: | First British settlement in North America at Roanoke. Expedition of two ships sponsored by Sir Walter Ralegh. Followed on from Ralegh's half-brother's death at sea after sailing south on claiming Newfoundland for Queen Elizabeth. They stayed only a short time before returning to England with two local indians and returning the next spring with a colonising expedition. This was short lived and is assumed to have been over-run by native americans with all lives lost (McCrum et al, 1992). | ||
